HOW DO I SEE ISSUES? Complex and interconnected
In nursing school, a funny thing happens. You repeatedly get told to “think like a nurse.” But nobody actually tells you what that means. It took me years to finally figure out that to think like a nurse is to think consequentially; you have to anticipate downstream effects or consequences for every single action and be able to act quickly. We need legislators who think like nurses.
As a result, I began to see the human body and the world as interconnected systems. If you mess with one part of the system, you have to be able to think consequentially and anticipate downstream effects of how this may impact other systems. So, when I see an issue, it is not singular. It is not black and white, and it is not linear. But really, that’s reality. No issue is singular, no issue is black and white, and no issue is linear.
MY APPROACH TO SOLUTIONS? engage with people + evidence
I believe the people experiencing the problem have the best solutions, which is why I want to speak with you. I may know theories and research, but you are the expert in your life, and I respect that.
What I bring to the table is the ability to strengthen your story and suggestions with evidence to help create solutions that work for everyone, not just special interest groups.
Help me help you by completing this survey!
Meet Nicole Loew PhD, RN
WHO AM I? A sensible nurse who genuinely wants to help rural people and communities.
I am a nurse and researcher, who is a proud rural woman. I live with my husband, three kids, and two rescue pitbulls in Chariton. I am originally from Northwest WI where I grew up in a rural community on a dairy farm and was very active in 4-H, my Catholic church, Girls Scouts, and sports.
I was so inspired by the rural women in my life that I became a registered nurse and obtained my PhD in nursing from the University of Iowa to better understand and help rural Iowans.
WHY I AM RUNNING FOR STATE SENATE? Rural people are my bones, and I’m sick of politicians preying on rural values only to pass legislation that hurts us.
It hurts and angers me to watch rural towns shrink and struggle, schools consolidate and continually be underfunded, and families struggle to make ends meet. Rural Iowa feeds America. We are the economic engine of Iowa, and we deserve a voice. We deserve someone who isn’t going to prey on our values and sell their vote to out-of-state lobbyists and special interest groups.
Your zip code will impact your health more than your genetic code. And rural zip codes are worse off and policies are one of the biggest reasons why your zip code matters so much. Every single decision a legislator makes will impact your health, your community, and your life in some way, and we need legislators to recognize this.
